Steamboat Doubles Volleyball Tournament starts Friday

Denver-based Volleyball of the Rockies has put on the Steamboat Doubles Volleyball Tournament for the past 10 years and has seen its tournaments continue to grow. The event, formerly the Powderkeg Tournament, is in its 29th year in Steamboat Springs and kicks off Friday.

The Steamboat Springs City Council took the first step Tuesday toward relaxing fees and parking constraints on the operators of licensed vacation home rental properties, but not before it heard from passionate constituents on either side of an issue that has stirred a stew of emotions for more than a decade.

Routt County OKs conservation parcels

$6.1 million will purchase development rights on 9,400 acres

Routt County’s purchase of development rights program is poised to increase its total conserved acreage by 68 percent in the next 11 months after the Routt County Board of Commissioners acted Tuesday to earmark $6.1 million in dedicated conservation tax dollars to conserve 10 rural land parcels.

Steamboat's lodging 75 percent full during holiday weekend

Steamboat Springs’ lodging was 75 percent full Saturday, according to the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association’s lodging barometer. That amounts to 10,300 visitors in town.

Armstrong commits to Steamboat's Ride 4 Yellow

David Nagel, the event director for the Aug. 8 Ride 4 Yellow fundraising event, confirmed Wednesday that Lance Armstrong was scheduled to ride. The 26-mile ride along the Continental Divide trail is about half full, and organizers are bracing for a jump in interest now that the cycling legend will participate.

Boost in retail sales expected in Moffat, Routt Counties

Yampa Valley Partners Director Kate Nowak thinks the economy may be taking a turn for the better based on recent gross retail sales forecasts. Nowak and Scott Ford, director of the Routt County Economic Development Cooperative, have predicted a boost in retail sales in both Moffat and Routt counties, according to Yampa Valley Partners’ third quarter regional economic forecast newsletter. Gross retail sales in Moffat County are expected to top $35.8 million dollars in July, a 4.9-percent increase from 2009, according to the newsletter.

Steamboat cyclists finish strong in Breckenridge

Switchbacks, climbs no match for riders

Kelly Boniface was running out of gas on the final 45-minute stretch of Sunday’s Firecracker 50 bicycle race in Breckenridge, but she didn’t even think of stopping her titanium Moots Zirkel mountain bike. Boniface was one of several Steamboat cyclists who finished the race Sunday.

Joanne Palmer: What’s in a purse?

As a child, I was amazed my mother could produce a tissue on demand. Whenever one of her children had a runny nose, a spot of blood or sticky hands, my mother produced a tissue out of her purse. Now, I do the same, but my purse is less of a purse and more of a miniature suitcase.

The city of Steamboat Springs starts paving today on Mount Werner Road from Montview Lane to Mount Werner Circle.

12:23 a.m. Steamboat Springs Police Department officers were called to a noise complaint in the 400 block of Ore House Plaza where a group of people reportedly were running around and pounding on the floor. Officers gave them a verbal warning.

Computer analysis delays Loggers Lane case

Routt County Sheriff’s Of­­fice investigator Mike Curzon said a computer analysis is taking longer than expected in the Loggers Lane Owners Association investigation.
