Block Party in Steamboat 'just good fun'

It took 36 gallons of vanilla ice cream and 80 two-liter bottles of root beer for John Marshall and other volunteers to serve about 1,200 “Routt beer floats” during Sunday’s Pioneer Days Block Party in front of Tread of Pioneers Museum. Marshall, a museum board member, joked that it was quite a mess serving the floats, which have become a staple of the Fourth of July event hosted by Tread of Pioneers.

According to Ute tribe history, the Ute people have lived in their region, including the Yampa Valley, since the beginning of time. Unlike many other tribes where migration routes can be traced from a place of origin, there is nothing to contradict this history of the Utes’ arrival in the Yampa Valley.

Few issues ignite the passion of some local residents like that of vacation home rentals. The existing vacation home rental ordinance seems to have achieved a respectable balance of allowing such businesses to operate while minimizing impacts on neighbors.

Robert Wither captured the Class A ski jumping event at the Estes Park meet Sunday. Gordon Wren won the Class C event, and Douglas Armstrong was winner in Class D. John Steele was winner of the long standing jump of 89 feet and Everett Hudspeth second. Everett came second in Class A and Donald Wither third.

Class notes: O’Leary-Brennan awarded Strong scholarship prize

Andrew O’Le­ar­­y­-Brennan was selected to receive the Strong Insurance Scho­lar­ship for 2010. O’Leary-Brennan is the sixth recipient of the scholarship, created in 2005 to honor and encourage college-bound students faced with perceptual or communicative disorders who have taken steps to overcome the challenge.
