Steamboat Springs — String Board Theory is evolving.

The Steamboat Springs band, which has been together since 2007, now plays a “groove-infused, funk dance rock,” bassist Jeff Barlow said.

“We’re kind of progressing in our music style, definitely getting a little more dance-oriented but still keeping the funk, jam and rock in there, as well,” he said. “We’re just infusing it with more of a dance vibe.”

String Board Theory plays at 9:30 p.m. Sunday at Old Town Pub & Restaurant. The show is free.

Barlow added that the band, which includes Jeff Hayes on drums and Tyler Kimball on guitar and lead vocals, also has enhanced its light show to add to the entertainment aspect of the show.

Now full-time musicians, the trio returns from playing six shows in seven days in Montana, including the “Love Your Mother Earth” festival in Clinton, Mont., earlier this month. It was their first time playing outside Colorado.

Barlow said String Board Theory has an upcoming tour of the Southwest, which includes parts of Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. And he added that the band has set up some studio time to record its “long overdue” debut album, which is scheduled for release before the end of summer.

But before all that, String Board Theory returns to play in Steamboat.

“We’re really excited to be playing on the Fourth,” Barlow said. “It’s going to be one of those great nights after the fireworks, everyone’s in high spirits. We hope to keep everything that way, throw down and play a great night of music.

“We haven’t played Steam­boat in a while,” he said. “It’s always nice to come home.”
