Parents of Olympic-bound locals honored for service

Steamboat Springs As their sons head to the winter Olympics, two local families are also being recognized for their years of work with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.
Nancy and Jim Spillane, parents of Johnny Spillane, and Jeanne and Dennis Lodwick, parents of Todd Lodwick, were selected to serve as the marshals for the 2010 Winter Carnival.
Nancy Spillane said that after three decades of volunteering with the club, where she and Jim could often be seen in the tower or on the landing area marking jumps, it came as a surprise to be named marshal.
Spillane, as director of the Lowell Whiteman Primary School, was also often in the parade down Lincoln Avenue.
“It will be nice to get a ride this time instead of fearing for my life that I’m going to fall off the diamond hitch,” she said.
Jeanne Lodwick agreed that there have been many nights on the jumps for Wednesday night jumps and that it was an honor to be named marshal.
“Winter Carnival is the best. The town comes together to celebrate … the community and who we are and our traditions,” she said. “When they called this year I felt very honored, very, very honored, to be a part of it.”
Sarah Floyd, with the Winter Sports Club, said the two families were chosen to recognize their work and to celebrate their sons’ accomplishments.
“Because it’s an Olympic year and both of their boys are headed to the Olympics, all their years of volunteering and pitching in are coming to a very exciting finish,” she said.
The marshals will be at the opening ceremonies Feb. 3, will be honored during the night extravaganza Feb. 6 and will ride in the parade Feb. 7.
