Thank whiteness there is more snow in Steamboat’s forecast for Sunday, because we haven’t been getting our share. Even if it dumps on the last day of the month, January 2010 will not go down in Steamboat history as 31 days of abundance. And if you have the empty feeling that you haven’t had the opportunity to shred the white gold you’re entitled to this winter, it’s no illusion. With fewer than three days left in the month Friday morning, the ski area had counted January snowfall of 39.5 inches. The season-long snowfall total for 2009-10 (the counting began in October when a few aspen leaves still clung to the trees) stood at 135.5 inches Friday.

Census seeks local workers for March questionnaire distribution
At the beginning of March, Coloradans will start trooping from door to door to count their neighbors as part of the 2010 census. That requires about 80 workers in Routt County, and census workers said there is a test nearly every day within driving distance of Steamboat Springs for people who would like to work.
Girls hockey team to play last home game Sunday
When Steamboat Springs U-19 girls coach Alexa Pighini went looking for players six years ago at the middle school, she had no idea what she’d uncover. Now for eight seniors, the end is near. The U-19 girls team will play its last home game at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Howelsen Ice Arena against a team from Colorado Springs.
Steamboat hoops teams win at Eagle Valley
The Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team remained hot Friday, mopping up Eagle Valley, 49-32. Steamboat, now 12-4 overall and 7-1 in the Western Slope League, got a complete effort in its second showdown with Eagle Valley.

Reggae artist Pato Banton brings positive message to Ghost Ranch
Pato Banton started out in the music business at 9 years old as a lookout for neighborhood parties featuring his stepfather, a Jamaican-born disc jockey. Banton is set to appear Sunday at Ghost Ranch Saloon; local musician DJ Also Starring also is on the bill. Tickets to the show are $10 in advance or $15 at the door.

Judge rules that photographer may be in the courtroom for Capote case
Fourteenth Judicial District Judge Shelley Hill granted the Steamboat Pilot & Today’s request to have still photography from inside the courtroom during the Capote assault trial on two conditions: that the photographer take no photos of the jury and that the photographer not be a distraction during the proceedings.
