20 moose from North Park relocated to Flat Tops area
Twenty members of the North Park moose herd have a new address in Rio Blanco County this week. The moose were captured last week from the willow bottoms in Jackson County, on the other side of the Park Range from Steamboat Springs, Colorado Division of Wildlife spokesman Randy Hampton said.

Meeting to discuss leash laws tonight
The Steamboat Springs Parks and Recreation Commission will hold a work session and public meeting at 5:30 p.m. today at the Steamboat Springs Community Center to discuss a leash law program.

South Routt School Board budget cut discussions begin
Members look at possible 2010-11 cuts
The South Routt School Board met in a special session Tuesday to begin discussing how to cut a projected $472,000 from the 2010-11 budget. Business Manager Dina Murray and Superintendent Scott Mader reiterated that the projection was merely a starting point and didn’t include salary increases for personnel or other possible cuts.
Steamboat briefs: Arts Council plans middle school musical for May
The Steamboat Springs Arts Council is planning a middle school musical. Auditions will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the Steamboat Springs Middle School choir room. All middle school students who want to perform must come prepared with a 30-second or one-minute song. Students can sing a cappella or with a CD accompaniment.

1 a.m. Steamboat Springs Police Department officers arrested a 31-year-old Steamboat Springs man on suspicion of driving under the influence, DUI per se, speeding, failure to signal and disregarding a stop sign after a traffic stop at Lincoln Avenue and Dream Island Plaza.

The Hayden Tigers girls basketball team lost a heartbreaking game to the Little Snake River Rattlers, 50-46, at home Tuesday, but that didn’t stop them from making a statement more important than the final score. The Tigers used the game to raise money for cancer research as part of the nationwide Coaches vs. Cancer campaign.

Significant cuts to state education spending are going to hit hard in public school districts across Colorado, including our three school systems in Routt County. Advance planning and open communication with residents will help ease the pain of the cuts and may lead to thoughtful solutions for minimizing the impact in classrooms.

USPS spokesman: Sundance lease extension is ‘set in stone’
The lease isn’t signed yet, but a U.S. Postal Service spokesman said Tuesday that it’s “strongly set in stone” that postal boxes will remain at the Sundance branch for as many as three years beyond what would have been a March 15 closure date.
Comprehensive document up for approval in Oak Creek
After years of revisions and meetings, the updated Oak Creek Comprehensive Plan has a conclusion in sight pending small changes and approvals in the coming month. With provisions that would direct the town character for years to come, including some zoning changes and recommendations, the plan would work with the town’s land-use code to guide the area’s growth.

“Somnium,” the 14th annual Steamboat Springs High School Dance Showcase, opens at 7 p.m. Thursday in the high school auditorium. Tickets are $8 for students, $10 for the general public and $12 for reserved seating.

During Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball coach John Ameen’s four-year tenure, Steamboat has lost in almost every conceivable way to rival Moffat County. That, however, all changed Tuesday. Steamboat downed Moffat County, 45-34, to remain in second place in the Western Slope League, just a game behind Rifle.
