Awareness week to promote education after this month’s tree well death
As ski areas across Colorado gear up for National Safety Awareness Week, which started Saturday and runs through Friday, Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. has a special interest in promoting tree well safety and is finding new ways to educate skiers. An Arapahoe Basin Ski and Snowboard Area instructor, Grace Lynn McNeil, was found dead in a tree well Jan. 6 at the bottom of Chute 3 at Steamboat Ski Area. In January 2008, two other skiers died in the natural hazards.

Our View: Housing report a starting point for change
On Tuesday, a citizens committee formed this summer plans to present to the Steamboat Springs City Council a clear, concise analysis of some of the steps needed to finally achieve meaningful affordable housing policy. And although we’re optimistic the report will push the city onto the right track, by no means will the coming reform be simple or straightforward.

Steamboat Ski and Snowboard School instructor Chip Shevlin said he’s been involved in the locals clinic as long as it’s been around and that he’s seen many of the forms it has taken throughout the years. The five-day clinic is spread across five Saturdays this season.

2009 sees just 20 permits for homes, duplexes
The depth of the 2009 building slump here was underscored this week when the Routt County Regional Building Department issued a report showing that just eight permits were issued all year for new single-family homes in Steamboat Springs city limits. They had an aggregate value of $6.4 million for permit purposes.
Steamboat 700 property tax rates would be highest in county
Property tax rates in the proposed Steamboat 700 annexation would be more than double those in Steamboat Springs and would top rates across Routt County, according to 2009 figures. The difference boils down to about $100 per month between property tax payments for owners of a $350,000 home in an annexed Steamboat 700.
25th annual Stampede attracts more than 140 competitors
With Saturday’s conditions, it was tough to find anyone with a negative word to say about the 25th annual Steamboat Stampede at the Steamboat Ski Touring Center. More than 140 competitors skated or classic skied one of five distances in pristine, almost springlike conditions.

Bud Werner Memorial Library hosts “Romeo and Juliet, Here and Now,” a free Shakespeare reading group that runs Wednesdays from Feb. 3 to March 16. Led by English teacher Sally Frostic, this group is limited to 15 participants who want to enjoy the play again or for the first time. The workshop is designed to stimulate enjoyment and discussion and be attuned to group needs and interests. The library will loan copies of the book to participants. Construction at the Sk8 Church building in Riverside Plaza is ramping up — literally. The west Steamboat Springs space, leased by Sk8 Church for at least the next 18 months thanks to an anonymous grant, will have a meeting area, offices, lounge and, most important, an indoor skate park.

Like a little kid, Harold Fischel, with his snowboard in hand, sat on the handrail outside the gondola building at Steamboat Ski Area and slid down — a wide smile across his face. The brief act encapsulates Fischel’s youthful personality, but he’s no kid. He turns 75 on Wednesday.

He’s been negotiating rides with truck drivers, walking up to them at truck stops in Arizona, Utah, California, New Mexico or any of about 10 other states. From those drivers, Steinberg is gathering stories and photos — of the road, of the inside of the cab, of the people driving and of a road-warrior lifestyle.
