Eagle debate strikes chord

Development battle similar to Steamboat 700 conversation

Last week’s vote by Eagle residents to deny a proposed development came after a debate about growth similar to local talk about Steamboat 700. On Jan. 5, Eagle residents turned out in record numbers to vote on Eagle River Station, an 88-acre development that proposed 581 homes, a 150-room hotel and 552,000 square feet of commercial space.

Gates Gooding creates thesis about Steamboat’s growth at MIT

Gates Gooding is hosting a public meeting Thursday night to talk with city residents about Steamboat 700, as the first step in a study to quantify the proposed annexation’s potential impacts. For his graduate thesis at MIT, he hopes to create a scientific, quantifiable study of potential impacts from future local development, or lack thereof.

World Junior Team headed to Germany

Nordic combined skier Tay­lor Fletcher may have been in search of top finishes at the World Cup the past few weeks, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t keeping a close eye on what was happening back home and who he would be skiing with at the Junior World Championships later this month. Luckily for Fletcher, who scored the first World Cup points of his career with a 29th-place finish in Val di Fiemme, Italy, during the weekend, there will be lots of familiar faces on the Nordic combined team.

School Board renews charter contract

The Steamboat Springs School Board unanimously approved a five-year contract extension with the North Routt Community Charter School on Monday. The 5-0 vote came after a discussion about the school district’s liability should the charter school go into default. The school is in the middle of a campaign to raise $1.7 million toward the construction of a new $4.8 million facility.

Officials plan to hold workshop about review of agency today

After a five-week hiatus during the holidays, the Craig City Council plans to start the new year where it left off — addressing concerns regarding the All Crimes Enforcement Team drug task force. Craig city officials plan to host a public workshop about the Colorado Bureau of Investigation’s independent review of the agency at 5:30 p.m. today at Craig City Hall.

Steamboat briefs: Youths donate more than 600 food items to program

Bud Werner Memorial Library has announced that 100 children and teens donated more than 600 food items during its Food for Fines Program in December. The youths were allowed to have late fees waived in exchange for donations to the LIFT-UP of Routt County Food Bank.

Ski instructor died from suffocation

Grace Lynn McNeil was found Jan. 6

The Arapahoe Basin ski instructor who was found dead at Steamboat Ski Area last week suffocated, Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg said Monday. Ryg said autopsy results revealed that Grace Lynn McNeil died of suffocation after falling into a tree well.

Pair of avalanches were human-caused at Rabbit Ears

The tenderness of the snowpack in the Routt County backcountry revealed itself during the weekend, with a pair of human-caused avalanches on Rabbit Ears Pass and several more slides in northern Routt County.
