Love of racing still strong among masters program skiers
The depth of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club is never more evident than in the hours before and after children come and go, when the snow at the downtown Steamboat Springs complex is still a crisp corduroy, and the pace, at least at first glance, is decidedly slower. That’s the realm of the Winter Sports Club Alpine Masters program, a collection of skiers who defy the assumption that Steamboat’s best-known organization is made up of tomorrow’s Olympians.
Joel Reichenberger: 1st-race jitters
Self-deprecating humor may not work so well on ski racers. Believe me, I’ve spent a week working it as well as I can, and mostly what I get back are blank stares followed by wide smiles and hearty reassurance. I continually make jokes about how ugly my first ski race is going to be.

Best of the Web: Steamboat 700 vote
Attainable housing has been promised many times, and the annexation ordinance was definitely seeking to put that attainability promise “into writing.” But in making its pre-election deadline, the ordinance was not able to reach any conclusion on attainability. So the ordinance’s very brief Attainability Section punted instead and called for creating an “Attainability Program” that would put in writing how this annexation will deliver on its attainability promise.
Chris Kipfer: Skiing safety
The latest skiing tragedy on our mountain illustrates the need for more education in the hazards of the sport. Your article in Thursday’s paper (“Woman dies at ski area”) was helpful but did not cover all the bases. When skiing trees, always hold your poles without using the pole straps. Aside from saving you from a dislocated shoulder, it can save your life to have your hands free to create a breathing space during or after a fall. Practice taking a full breath during all falls so that there is enough air in your lungs to blow the snow from your face if your head is buried. In Europe, where all rescues must be paid for and “out of bounds” rescues may be charged at triple actual costs, skiing in a group has a protocol. The rules are simple. Each member of the group keeps track of the skier preceding him, and the best skier of the group skis last. This shared responsibility in itself may have prevented this tragic death.
Don Mathes: Zoning denial right
City Council President Cari Hermacinski got it totally wrong with her comment that “this (denial of a zoning change on Burgess Creek Road) sets a terrible precedent for any developer trying to work in our community.” The exact opposite is true: The denial lets developers know that when they propose something that does not serve this community or that changes the character of neighborhoods to something residents don’t want, they will be denied. Thanks to Walter Magill, whose “no” vote was the crucial one. It turned the council around, and the message for developers is clear: You’re welcome here, bring some good ideas, work with us, but don’t try to steamroll us because we know the kind of community we want this to be. Steamboat Highlands developers just didn’t get that.
Lance Scranton: Kudos to football
As a football coach for Moffat County the past 13 seasons, I want to offer hearty congratulations to the Steamboat Springs Sailors football team for an exciting season. Led by some extremely talented players, the team represented the Western Slope League with class. I want to extend a special note of thanks to Aaron Finch and his staff for winning with class and humility. Coach Finch has been an excellent role model for students and coaches around the league. His genuine personality is always on display, and he has proven that hard work and dedication do make a difference in the lives of kids. While the Yampa Valley rivalry between Moffat County and Steamboat goes back and forth, Finch has never put the wins and losses above treating coaches and players with dignity and respect. Kudos to your football program!

Looking Back for Jan. 11, 1935
From the top of a haystack at the Gilleland ranch, a huge bull elk defied Hern and Charles Gilleland and a barking dog last week. The men had driven to the stack with a sled to get a load of hay. Before they had a chance to load up, the big elk came down the hillside toward the stack. The animal paid no attention to the barrage of snowballs that were hurled at him but calmly walked to the stack. The dog barked furiously and followed and elk around and around the stack. The elk, watching for a chance, jumped to the top of the stack and stood his ground, hair bristling and teeth gnashing, a fighting mood not to be taken lightly.

Colorado Group Realty expands to Sheraton Steamboat Resort
When the Sheraton Steamboat Resort decided last year to reclaim the office space occupied by Colorado Group Realty, the brokers in the real estate agency headquartered in downtown Steamboat were more than a little disappointed. Things have a funny way of working out. The Sheraton completed a handsome remodel of the space, including fat log columns, arced display walls and rock accents. The intent was to house Sheraton’s own sales team. When the decision was reversed and the Sheraton sales effort was instead based in another city, Colorado Group jumped at the chance to reoccupy its former digs.
