Steamboat Springs Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club skiers flew away with a few top finishes as the club’s Alpine team hit the slopes for four days of competition at Keystone.
Shane McLean led the way for the team, logging its only first-place finish in a super G race Monday.
She also was third in another super G race the same day.
“Shane’s been in our program for quite a few years now and is awesome,” club Alpine ability coach Anje Worrell said. “She has definitely been working on some things, and for her, this was a big accomplishment. Super G is her strongest discipline, but she’s also been skiing really good in the other races we’ve gone to.”
Sam Glaisher was the top boy from Steamboat. During the four days, he logged two top finishes, coming in third in Sunday’s giant slalom and eighth in the same event Saturday.
“He’s been doing great, too,” Worrell said. “He’s one of our best skiers, and he’s definitely been performing well.”
Ryan McConnell had his best race Tuesday with a second-place finish in the super G.
Ciar Colgan wasn’t able to crack the podium, but filed a strong showing of her own as she skied near the top of nearly every race she entered. She was in the top 10 four times: fourth and ninth in a pair of Monday super G races, eighth in a Sunday GS and ninth in a Saturday GS.
“She’s worked super hard,” Worrell said. “All the kids have done a lot. That work is showing off in the results. These kids are definitely on track and skiing well.”
Steamboat picked up other top-10 performances from Scott Ptach, who was seventh in a Saturday GS; Julia Cooper, who was sixth in a Sunday GS and 10th in a Monday super G; Jimmy Hostetler, who was seventh in a Tuesday super G; and James Schindler, 10th in another Tuesday super G.
Saturday’s and Sunday’s races were part of the Millennium Bank Junior Ski Cup. Monday’s and Tuesday’s races were part of the Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup Elite FIS.
