Steamboat Springs skier Johnny Spillane dominated the Sunday competition at a Nordic combined event in Oberhof, Germany, as he made the climb to the top of a World Cup podium for the first time in his 130 circuit starts.

Ski area hits 100-inch mark

Weekend snowfall puts 2009-10 season total past 1st milestone

A snowstorm that hit early Saturday gave Steamboat Ski Area a powdery push to the 100-inch mark for season snowfall. Reporting 97 inches for the season and no new snowfall at 5 a.m. Saturday, Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. reported an additional 5.5 inches of new snow on its Web site by 2 p.m.

12:49 a.m. Police and Fire Rescue emergency responders were called to a fight in the 700 block of Yampa Street. One person involved in the fight had minor injuries, including a cut on the left elbow and swelling around the left eye, police said. That person refused to pursue criminal charges, police said.

Strawberry Park 4th- and 5th-graders tell stories at Bud Werner Memorial Library

Sarah Heineke had storytelling jitters,. The Strawberry Park Elementary School fourth-grader was the first of four members of Strawberry Park Elem­entary Story Sayers Sizzlers to tell a story Wednesday at Bud Werner Memorial Library. It was the first out-of-school performance for the students, who constitute the school’s storytelling group.

3 new restaurants scheduled to open in Steamboat this year

Delta Blue to open in former Yacht Club; Irish pub, breakfast spot also on tap

Steamboat Springs will offer new places to get breakfast, beer or a Southern-style meal in 2010. Plans for two restaurants and an Irish pub are under way across town. All are scheduled to open by mid spring.

Craig and Andrea Kennedy will welcome an adult all-mountain ski camp to Steamboat Springs next week for the fifth consecutive year through their business Access Anything. The camp will offer adaptive skiers the chance to ride anywhere.

Father Bayer tries to raise $2M more for Holy Name

Father Ernest Bayer got a new church for Christmas. Now all he has to do is find about $2 million more to build it. The Steamboat Springs City Council gave final approval Dec. 15 to the first and largest phase of an expansion for Holy Name Catholic Church, of which Bayer is the pastor.

Hayden High School coach finds happiness in wrestling

Ty Camilletti pulled over along the highway in Craig, and he wouldn’t keep answering questions until he’d said his piece. “If we’re going to do this story on me,” he said, pausing an interview about his first season as the head coach of the Hayden High School wrestling team, “I need to thank some people.” And he did.

Tim Corrigan wants every incoming Soroco High School freshman to have an Apple MacBook laptop computer. And he’d like the program to start next year. The South Routt School Board president’s idea may sound radical. But after hearing Corrigan’s rationale, it seems more realistic.
