Wall files election paperwork
County sheriff remains tight-lipped about candidacy
Routt County Sheriff Gary Wall has filed the paperwork to run for re-election this fall.
According to the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office, Wall, a Democrat, filed his candidate affidavit Friday. Wall previously had declined to announce whether he would run again.
Two Republican challengers, All Crimes Enforcement Team Commander Garrett Wiggins and Routt County Rifle Club President David Smith Jr., have announced their intention to run for sheriff.
Reached by telephone Monday, Wall said he still was not ready to announce his intentions despite the paperwork filing.
“When I’m ready to announce and declare and do all that, I’ll let you know,” he said. “I’m going to do something when I’m ready to do something.”
Wall said he filed the papers based on what he plans to do in the future but noted that candidates can pull out of the election.
The deadline to file paperwork is based on party decisions, but the final day for an unaffiliated candidate petition is June 15.
The committee “Sheriff Wall for Sheriff in 2010,” with Wall’s wife, Jennifer Wall, as the registered agent, has filed expense reports with the state. There is no income other than interest. There have been no expenses since 2006.
Wall defeated Wiggins in the 2006 election, 55 percent to 45 percent. Wall did not face a Democratic primary opponent in that election; Wiggins defeated current Hayden Police Chief Ray Birch in the Republican primary that year.
