US Nordic Combined Ski Team returns to Vancouver

Skiers say they appreciate the training period in Utah

It was back to work for the members of the U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team on Saturday. The team returned to Whistler Olympic Park in British Colum­­­­­­bia to begin preparing for Tuesday’s Nordic combined team event and Thursday’s large hill individual Gundersen.

Hayden junior wins Class 2A state championship Saturday

Hayden is nearly a four-hour drive from Denver’s Pepsi Center, and for much of the weekend at the state wrestling tournament, that distance seemed to have an obscuring effect when it came to Tigers’ junior Treyben Letlow. Letlow went on to win the Class 2A state championship Saturday.

Matt Watwood’s elation Tuesday was obvious to the women working at the Oak Creek branch of the U.S. Post Office. Watwood’s celebration, what he described as a lot of screaming and yelling, was well deserved. He was chosen as one of only 40 recipients for the prestigious Boettcher scholarship.

The two largest law enforcement agencies in Routt County were called out more than 10,000 times in 2009, resulting in hundreds of arrests and many more warnings. According to statistics from the Steamboat Springs Police Department and Routt County Sheriff’s Office, police were called to 9,507 calls in 2009, and deputies were called to service 891 times.

Scholarship program helps locals stay in dance studio

Kailee Davis has been dancing since she was 2. Last fall, it looked as if she might have to put her dancing on hold. Things turned for the better in December, when the Davis family learned Kailee had been awarded a scholarship to participate in local dance classes from the Steamboat Dance Theatre.

With the Hayden High School boys basketball team down by 2 points at the half, it suddenly became clear just how important winning Saturday’s first postseason game was. The reality check seemed to be just what the boys needed, and Valdez would end the game with 20 points, helping the boys to a 62-54 win against Vail Christian at home.

Community gardens sprout across Routt County

When the snow finally melts in Routt County this spring, work will begin in earnest for three new community gardens in Oak Creek, Hayden and Steamboat Springs. Spring will mark the second year of a similar garden in Yampa.
