— The lineup for the 2010 Bud Light Rocks the Boat free concert series is set, with reggae, rock, hip-hop and soul styles featured in five concerts at Steamboat Ski Area running March 13 through April 11.

John Waldman, of locally based production company Great Knight Productions, books the series. This year’s lineup meets his qualifications for providing a blend of musical styles that can appeal to a variety of tastes and age demographics.

“It’s diverse; that’s the biggest thing,” Waldman said. “Every year, you’re trying to look for the best available acts, but you also want the best variety you can get.”

Reggae collective Easy Star All-Stars starts the series at 3 p.m. March 13 in Gondola Square at the base of Steamboat Ski Area. The band is best known for its dub renditions of classic albums, putting its touch on songs originally recorded by Pink Floyd, Radiohead and The Beatles with its “Dub Side of the Moon,” “Radiodread” and “Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band.” Learn more about the group at www.easystar.com.

On March 20, hip-hop artist Lyrics Born will take the stage with a full band, providing a seamless connection between creative rhymes and groove-oriented, funk-thick production. Lyrics Born most recently appeared in Steamboat for a Ghost Ranch Saloon show in July. Learn more about him at www.myspace.com/lyricsborn.

Falling into a niche that’s somewhere between a Prince song, 1990s party rap and 1970s soul, The Pimps of Joytime craft dance music with a sense of humor and boundless energy. The band opened for The Greyboy Allstars during the 2009 Steamboat Springs Free Summer Concert Series and plays March 27 in Gondola Square. Learn more at www.myspace.com/pimpsofjoytime.

Reggae roots provide a platter to pile bits of hip-hop, pop-rock, lush orchestration and skater attitude for California-based band The Dirty Heads, playing April 3. Learn more about the five-piece band at www.dirtyheads.com.

Closing the series on April 11, during the ski area’s third annual “Springalicious” season-ending festival, pop-conscious singer-songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter will share his honest-minded and soul-steeped original songs. With his infectious melodies and this-will-make-you-feel-better lyrics, Frankenreiter falls into a sound similar to his friend and noted mentor, Jack Johnson. Learn more at www.myspace.com/donavonfrankenreiter.

Springalicious starts the closing weekend with official events including the 30th annual SmartWool Cardboard Classic on April 10 and the third annual Splashdown Pond Skim on April 11. Go to www.steamboat.com for more information.
