What: Sailors quarterfinal playoff game vs. Ralston Valley
When: 6 p.m. today
Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School hockey team stepped up at the playoffs Friday in Vail, edging out Summit High School, 1-0.
Jon Winkelblech scored in the first period on an assist from Vladan Chase, giving the Sailors all they would need to take down the Summit Tigers in the first round. Steamboat plays at 6 p.m. today in Vail against Ralston Valley.
“I think that we did what we needed to win,” Sailors coach Jeff Ruff said. “The Summit team came out and played very, very hard — maybe harder than our guys thought they might.”
The teams played to a 3-3 tie in December.
Ruff said he was pleased with the win but that the team would have to make adjustments before tonight’s quarterfinals.
“We need to put together 45 minutes of solid hockey,” he said. “We played pretty well here and there and let down here and there, but through good goaltending and solid defense, we were able to nullify all of their threats to our net.”
He said he saw particularly solid play from team captain Ian Anderson, as well as the line of Jake Bearss, John Wharton and Lance Ostrom and the line of seniors that includes Winkelblech and Chase. Summit outshot the Sailors, 28-20, but nothing made it past Erik Owen at goal.
Ruff said he was pleased with the victory and with the crowd.
“It was nice that we had a lot of fans here, and I know a lot of fans will be driving down tomorrow, and we appreciate their support,” he said Friday night.
Ralston Valley beat Battle Mountain, 1-0, to advance to tonight’s game.
