Steamboat Springs On a Wednesday night outside a warehouse on 13th Street, crashing drums and ripping guitars seem to ignore the sound-blocking mattress inside XIII’s practice studio.
The sound makes its way out into the parking lot of the row of buildings where Steamboat’s newest metal band is working on a set of original songs that will make their debut today.
XIII — “thirteen” — puts out a brand of metal that draws on years of listening and playing by the band’s five members. Pantera, Mudvayne, A Perfect Circle and Tool are the jumping off point for a sound lead singer Guy Del Hierro at first said represents a wide spectrum of songs that are “anywhere from light and happy to angry and violent.”
Then again, maybe not so “light and happy,” Del Hierro acknowledged.
Today’s metal-fest at Old Town Pub is XIII’s first show in town. Local group Subject to Blackout and Longmont five-piece Novus Folium — Latin for “new leaf” — also are on the bill. The show gets going at about 10 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door.
The idea for XIII came near the end of 2009, and after some jockeying, the band found a spot to rehearse in the warehouse building. At the top of a set of stairs, the musicians of XIII have two small rooms that are theirs — provided they don’t make too much noise for the neighbors.
It’s a “crunchy, in-your-face” kind of playing, said guitarist and backup singer Isaac Slobodnik. Guitarist Geno Salazar said the style allows anyone planning to come to the show a chance to move. Drummer Aaron Labruzza promised anyone craving a hard rock experience a chance to thrash.
Del Hierro and bassist Jason Meier played together in the former Denver-based metal band No Face. That group played frequent shows in Steamboat before disbanding. Now a Steamboat resident, Del Hierro picked up Salazar and Labruzza through friends and added former Plagiarists guitarist Slobodnik to round out XIII.
Del Hierro hopes XIII can give a jolt to the local music scene, bringing more hard bands to the area for shows and “get an actual scene going,” he said.
