Craig For the last home game for his senior players, Moffat County High School coach Craig Mortensen would not have changed a thing.
Not only did Moffat County win against Steamboat Springs High School, 43-29, on Tuesday, but the Bulldogs also snapped a two-game losing streak.
“I’m proud of the way our girls bounced back,” Mortensen said. “They were pretty down after Friday and Saturday. They showed that they are a resilient team.”
If that was to be her last game between the Sailors and Bulldogs, Steamboat Springs High School senior Colleen King would have preferred a different ending.
King, who delivered 13 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks, said the packed MCHS gymnasium might have contributed to her team’s problems.
“I wanted to go out on a different note,” she said. “The rivalry has kind of gone down hill since my freshman year. It’s not as heated, but it’s more fun to play these girls; we’re all familiar with each other, and we’re friends.”
In the last meeting between the two teams, the Sailors were able to win, 45-34, but the team couldn’t find a rhythm in Moffat County, King said.
“We didn’t play as a team,” she said. “I think we might have come out a little too pysched up, but we didn’t play well together.”
After falling behind in the opening minute, Moffat County never trailed again.
The Bulldogs built up a 24-14 lead at halftime, but Steamboat was able to keep up the pace behind King and junior Hannah Moore, who had 9 points in the contest.
“We picked it up in the second half,” King said. “But we just couldn’t find our groove.”
Part of the reason the Sailors couldn’t find a groove was the suffocating Moffat County defense, Mortensen said.
“We did a good job defending and taking away the ball,” he said. “I don’t think (Steamboat) had a whole lot of easy shots. They had to work for everything they got. They had to take tough shots.”
For Moffat County, Lauren Roberts had 10 points and eight rebounds, Amanda Snyder, Melissa Camilletti and Annie Sadvar each had 7 points, and Lindsey Yoast, Jessi Moser and Nike Cleverly each had 4 points.
