Spillane's win historic for U.S., Steamboat

Steamboat skier jumps, races to 1st U.S. Nordic combined Olympic medal

Steamboat resident Johnny Spillane has won the United States' first-ever Winter Olympic medal in Nordic combined, taking silver Sunday in the Normal Hill Individual Gundersen event at the 2010 games in Whistler, British Columbia.

The Web site for Let’s Vote committee, opposing Steamboat 700, includes questions such as “What if Steamboat 700 runs into financial trouble at a point in time when the expansion of the water system becomes necessary? Who pays for a needed system if the developer can’t?” “It begs the question, who’s going to come out of pocket for that?” Let’s Vote member Bill Moser, a local Realtor, said last week.

He was less than 24 hours from one of the biggest races of his life, but U.S. Nordic combined skier Billy Demong wasn’t about to let the anticipation keep him awake Saturday night. Today's normal hill individual Gundersen event begins with the jumping portion at 11 a.m. The cross-country portion begins at 2:45 p.m. MST. NBC television coverage begins at noon today.

Streaky play was the rule in Saturday evening’s showdown between the top two boys basketball teams in the Western Slope League. Steamboat briefs: Wreck kills 1 on US 40 near Hayden

two-vehicle wreck resulted in a death Saturday evening, Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Scott Elliott said. The wreck occurred after 6 p.m. on U.S. Highway 40 between Milner and Hayden. A Nissan SUV was heading east on U.S. 40 near mile marker 117, leaving Mount Harris Canyon, when it spun out of control, Elliott said.

School holds presentation about dangers of sending explicit texts

If you don’t want your dad to see what you’re texting, don’t send it. That’s the message Steamboat Springs High School sophomore Amy Brodie delivered to a class of freshmen. Brodie and three other Advocates Building Peaceful Communities peer educators were giving a presentation about the dangers of “sexting.”

Let's Vote Committee: Water equals vote no

Last spring, the city of Steamboat Springs adopted water adequacy and water rights dedication policies that apply to new developments. Under the Water Rights Dedication Policy, every applicant shall dedicate to the city a dependable water supply equal to 120 percent of the water rights necessary to meet the requirements identified in the water demand report.

A little bit of North Caro­lina invaded the west side of Steamboat Springs this week as local restaurateur Rex Brice opened Lil’ House, billed as a country biscuits and coffee joint. Brice, who grew up in North Carolina, said he wanted to offer a new kind of restaurant on Steamboat’s west side.

Carol Rickman also has had family and friends in to visit with her, and Frances Wither has been having family in visiting on a regular basis in the past weeks.
