Jury deadlocked on 2nd-degree assault charge for Eduardo Capote, who will be retried

A jury found Eduardo and David Capote not guilty of third-degree assault Wednesday after a day and a half of deliberations, but jurors could not reach a decision about the more serious charge of second-degree assault against Eduardo Capote. Jurors said the group deadlocked on the final charge, with five jurors saying Eduardo Capote was guilty and seven saying he was not guilty.

Jurors stopped deliberations at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and are set to continue this morning in the assault cases against David and Eduardo Capote. The case went to the jurors just before 1 p.m. Tuesday after attorneys made closing arguments.

Intrawest sells another resort

Intrawest, the parent company of Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp., has sold another one of its resorts. On Tuesday, Intrawest announced a definitive purchase agreement to sell its interests in Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Florida.

County commissioners deny valuation reductions for luxury condos

Routt County commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday against reducing the valuation for property tax purposes of 21 luxury condominiums at Steamboat Villas in the east wing of the Sheraton Steamboat Resort. The vote denied Starwood Vacation owners relief from a portion of 2009 taxes.

Library urges its users to take the ‘ePlunge’

A new platform that offers twice the amount of electronic material to patrons of Bud Werner Memorial Library has inspired an upcoming series of “ePlunge” classes. The series of free community classes starting Feb. 15 offers library users instructions about how to download electronic audio books, books, music and movies using the two software platforms offered for free in the library collection.

The Easy Peaces add history to music in concert today

The Easy Pea­­ces frontman Kip Strean plans to offer a short story or history lesson before most songs in The Easy Peaces’ set at 7 p.m. today at the Depot Art Center. The concert is part of the Steamboat Springs Arts Council Singer-Songwriter Series. Tick­ets are $5 at the door for Arts Council members and $10 for nonmembers.

12:28 a.m. Steamboat Springs Police Department officers and Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue emergency responders were called to a report of a disturbance in the 700 block of Walton Pond Circle. A man reported there were four or five people outside his door trying to get in, and one man outside possibly had a golf club. Police arrested a 19-year-old Steamboat Springs man on suspicion of felony menacing, on suspicion of false reporting, on suspicion of minor in possession and on a warrant for failure to appear. Officers also arrested a 21-year-old Poncha Springs man on suspicion of third-degree assault.

Steamboat briefs: Hagberg still in hospital after being hit by car

William “Rick” Hagberg, the man who was struck by a car Friday in Steamboat Springs, remains in critical condition at Denver Health Medical Center, a hospital spokesman said Tuesday.

Our View: Safety a concern at US 40, Walton Creek

On Friday night, a pedestrian was hit by a car and seriously injured. No matter how the case turns out, we think the way traffic flows into that confusing intersection is inherently dangerous and deserves scrutiny.
