DOW officials: Steamboat 700 site not crucial for deer, elk
City supports parks, open space proposal for annexation
The Steamboat 700 site does not provide critical wildlife habitat and would not significantly affect wetlands, state officials and a private consultant, respectively, said last week. A study of wetlands conducted by local natural resource consultants Western Bionomics in November 2006 found minimal environmental impacts from potential development at the site.
Snow at First Sight contest winners try out ski bikes at ski area
In many ways, it was the perfect match, ski bikes and the three novices who rode them Friday morning at Steamboat Ski Area. Ruchu Adhikary, Trevor Allison and Deena Bright had never been to Steamboat Springs before cruising into town for the first time this week. The three had never even seen snow before they arrived in Colorado early last month as winners of a Colorado Tourism Office’s Snow at First Sight contest.
Newest SSWSC member, Pat Deneen, is top American mogul skier
At age 22, Pat Deneen Jr., the newest member of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, might be the United States’ best opportunity for a medal in men’s moguls. He is the reigning World Champion, was the FIS Rookie of the Year in 2008 and has been on the fast track to skiing’s peak since he first strapped on skis at 11 months old.

Sailors squad passes Delta, 46-30; boys team falls, 64-58
Maybe in the past an ugly loss like Friday’s against Palisade would have derailed the Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team. Playing as crisply as the team has all year, Steamboat glided past Delta on Saturday, picking up an easy 46-30 win.

It’s kind of like the voice that reminds you of that important 2 p.m. meeting at work while you sip your morning coffee, or makes you wonder if you locked the front door of your house as you drive down the block. 1:39 a.m. Steamboat Springs Police Department officers made a traffic stop at Missouri Avenue and Grand Street. Officers arrested a 21-year-old Steamboat Springs man on suspicion of being a fugitive of justice for driving under revocation. Officers also arrested a 24-year-old Steamboat man on suspicion on driving under the influence, violation of bail bond conditions and failure to signal a turn.

Wirth: Ski Corp. to increase seat numbers on wings of ‘modest recovery’
An expansion of Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp.’s airline program could bring 10,000 more visitors to the Yampa Valley next winter than are flying in this season. Andy Wirth, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp., said last week that Ski Corp. officials and some major airlines are projecting “a modest recovery” in the economy by next winter and are negotiating airline deals accordingly.
Business File: Chamber to host speed networking Thursday
The Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association is hosting a speed networking event from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday at The Boathouse Pub. The event helps people meet and talk about business ideas. The $5 cost includes entry fee, appetizers and a drink ticket. The cost is $15 for people who aren’t Chamber members. Parents, police worry marijuana dispensaries confuse kids
Parent Julie Carta is concerned that the opening of medical marijuana dispensaries in Steamboat Springs sends a confusing message to children. Since August, three dispensaries have begun offering medical marijuana to registered patients. The city instituted a moratorium, providing time to draft a policy that allowed it to regulate the businesses.
