Snow sculptures give students chance to shine
Armed with shovels, garden tools, saws and in one case a plastic sword, Steamboat Springs High School students took to Lincoln Avenue at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday to begin sculpting. Their goal: To transform the city’s main drag into a display that represents Steamboat and highlights Ski Town USA’s Olympic heritage.

Saturday’s Winter Carnival events are about showmanship and tradition, with the Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast starting the day from 8 to 11 a.m. at Holy Name Catholic Church. Street events including skijoring are from 9 a.m. to noon on Lincoln Avenue, and Alpine ski flying starts at 9 a.m. at Howelsen Hill.

Soviet Union shows up, gathers golds in Italy in 1956 Olympics
After having to cancel the 1944 Winter Olympics because of World War II, Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, finally was able to host the winter games from Jan. 26 to Feb. 5, 1956. The town in northern Italy won the Olympic bid over Montreal, Colorado Springs and Lake Placid, N.Y. Several aspects made these games unusual: All of the venues were within walking distance except one, for the first time in history, the games relied heavily on corporate sponsorship (Fiat was the “official car”), and this was the first televised Winter Olympics. Thirty-two nations arrived to compete, including the Soviet Union, competing for the first time and winning more gold medals than any other nation.

Steamboat briefs: Street closures planned for Winter Carnival events
The city of Steamboat Springs Public Works Department will close Lincoln Avenue from Fifth to Seventh streets starting at 1 p.m. today for the Olympic Send-off & Community Celebration. After the send-off, the street will be closed from Fifth to 11th streets until 1 p.m. Saturday for Winter Carnival. Lincoln Avenue also will be closed from Fifth to 11th streets from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday for Winter Carnival street events.

Prints, paintings, sculpture, ceramic work and other styles of art will be highlighted at 25 downtown galleries, restaurants and retailers during today’s First Friday Artwalk. Receptions are scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Many galleries will stay open for an extra hour or so to accommodate crowds lingering downtown after the Olympic send-off celebration.
