Former Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club athletes and even their parents can hop back on a ski jump or a wide-open giant slalom course from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, when the group’s Alumni Club hosts a lasagna dinner during the annual Alumni Winterfest at Olympian Hall in the Howelsen Hill Lodge. The cost is $10 per person, and the event is open to anyone who wants to revive ties with the club.
Organizer Penny Fletcher, who is a Nordic skier mom, said the 20-meter ski jump will be open to all comers and a nonthreatening giant slalom course will be set on the face of Howelsen.
“Our biggest goal is to reunite athletes and parents for whom the club was a big part of their lives,” Fletcher said. “We have fun remembering all of those times we’d travel to Winter Park with nine kids and all their ski bags and coolers of food for a ski-jumping competition.”
But the Alumni Club is about more than that. Fletcher described how the club would raise funds to provide needed equipment to enhance training and competition at Howelsen in much the way that a high school booster club does.
“Our first project was purchasing an iPod Touch so they can play different (musical) soundtracks for different competitions, and we’re working on feeding the sound system into Olympian Hall,” she said.
Fletcher promised a costume contest with a 1990s neon ski clothing theme and retro ski memorabilia door prizes at Wednesday’s event.
People also are encouraged to bring leftover holiday sweets.
Annual membership fees for the Alumni Club are $20 for alumni younger than 30 and $50 for older adults. Five dollars of each membership will go to the Alumni Club, and the balance will go directly to the Winter Sports Club for operating expenses. Members also are encouraged to donate five hours in volunteer time annually.
