Steamboat Springs Despite its youth, the Steamboat Springs High School wrestling team is showing little signs of inexperience.
The Sailors placed fourth as a team Saturday in West Grand, just behind Hayden, Norwood and Coal Ridge. Steamboat was in second place going into the finals but lost both its matches and fell to fourth.
“We opened up the tournament slow, and the finals were hard on us,” coach Shane Yeager said. “But to keep it in perspective, it was good for a bunch of freshmen and sophomores.”
Five of Steamboat’s nine wrestlers placed, led by three second-place finishes. Nick Rossman at 125 pounds, Casey Williams at 140 pounds and Nathan Mack at 145 pounds advanced to the finals before losing.
Nathan Parks at 112 pounds finished third, and Dane Koepfer at 130 pounds finished fourth.
“It’s a tight bunch of guys in the room,” Yeager said. “They have good practice partners, match up well and push each other. The leadership coming out of the sophomores; they’re pushing the freshmen to be better. It’s going to be a fun bunch of guys to watch over the next couple of years.”
Steamboat returns to action Jan. 7 and 8 at the Tournament of Champions in Vernal, Utah.
