— Much like in Steamboat Springs, it started snowing in Vail late Friday and just didn’t stop Saturday.

The conditions made for an interesting high school classic race Saturday.

Still, the Steamboat Springs High School Nordic combined ski team came away from the opening meet with solid results. Wilber Ranieri paced the boys with a 17th-place finish. Jack Burger was 21st, Dane Dixson was 22nd and Peter White was 40th. On the girls side, Linnea Dixson was 13th, with Sarah White 17th and Martha Anderson 19th.

Eva Lambeck (25th), Mallory Hoots (27th), Hannah Barkey (29th) and Pichya Nimit (53rd) all battled the conditions.

All results are unofficial.

The conditions blanketed snow on the course, making skiers double pole and walk up hills.

“Everyone skied really solid,” coach Emily Lovett said. “I’m really pleased with our solid performance. I think we have an opportunity to ski stronger, but for the first race, I’m pleased.”

Steamboat next competes Jan. 8, when the team hosts a skate event at Howelsen Hill.
