Steamboat girls hoops loses to Star Valley

Steamboat Springs In a game that featured more than 50 fouls and little flow, the Steamboat Springs girls basketball team fell, 42-35, to Star Valley, Wyo., on the second day of the Flaming Gorge Classic 2010 invitational basketball tournament Friday.
“It was a very sloppy game,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said. “There was no flow to it on either side.”
In the half court and full court, neither team could get into an offensive rhythm. Star Valley ended up shooting 40 free throws, and Steamboat shot 20.
The Sailors defense kept them in the game, but foul trouble for Tara Spitellie, Hannah Moore, Katie Lettunich and Eryn Rinck hurt the offense. Steamboat was within 4 points multiple times in the fourth quarter, but the team never could claw any closer.
Friday’s “performance was a lot better than Thursday’s,” Ameen said. “We were going with it and just playing.”
Moore led the Sailors with 18 points, and Spitellie had 9.
Steamboat wraps up the Wyoming tournament at 8:15 a.m. today against Sheridan, Wyo.
“We (have) got to play like we played (Friday) on the defensive end and be able to handle their pressure in the full court,” Ameen said. “We do that, and I’ll be very happy with the outcome.”
