— Tasked with finding a way to help her community for her Steamboat Springs High School Leadership class, junior Christi Valicenti didn’t have to stray far from what she knows best.

Valicenti, who has played high school tennis the past two years and enjoyed the game since she was 3, created Tennis to Tackle Cancer. She said it’s a great way to benefit a cause that has affected her life while also introducing a new generation of players to the sport she loves.

Valicenti and her tennis teammates and coaches will host Tennis to Tackle Cancer from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs. The event includes 2 1/2 hours of tennis lessons, lunch and drinks. The camp is for beginner tennis players ages 9 to 18. The cost is $5 with all proceeds going to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“I knew I wanted to incorporate tennis and bring more kids into the tennis program,” Valicenti said. “I also knew I wanted to donate to a cancer research program.”

Valicenti said the idea to donate to cancer efforts came easily. She lost her grandfather and two of her uncles to cancer.

“It really makes you realize what’s important in life and to see what you can do to help,” she said.

In addition to Valicenti, tennis pros Don Toy and Greg Sussman will help with the clinic.

The camp will teach the basics of tennis as far as rules and correct strokes. Valicenti said she hopes the clinic will spur younger players to join the junior program while helping a good cause.

Registration for the clinic isn’t limited to a specific number of participants and is due Sunday. Valicenti said 32 people had registered as of Thursday. She hopes to get many more children and teens to sign up.

To register, stop by the Tennis Center or call 970-879-8400. Those interested can also call Valicenti at 970-879-9224.
