Steamboat figure skaters earn top results at Aspen meet


— Members of the Steamboat Springs Figure Skating Club opened the season last week by collecting several top results in Aspen during the first competition of the season Dec. 3 and 4.

Hanna Haggarty led the way in the juvenile class with a first-place finish in spins, a second-place result in the compulsory event and a third-place finish in the free skate. Several skaters, including Emily Eakins, Mariah Walker and Kayla Haggarty earned second-place finishes at the meet. Kayla Haggarty was second in the free skate in the pre-preliminary class, Walker was second in compulsory event in the basic Level 4, and Emily Eakins picked up second-place finishes in the spins and compulsory in the pre-preliminary class.

The team got third-place showings from Kayla Haggarty (pre-preliminary spins), Clare Franklin (preliminary spins and compulsory), Tasha Getten (basic Level 4 compulsory), Kira Lorenzen (pre-preliminary compulsory and free skate), Mariah Walker (basic Level 4 free skate), and Patricia Davie (preliminary free skate).

Other Steamboat skaters placing at the meet in the spins event included Kira Lorenzen, who was fourth in the pre-preliminary, Patricia Davie, who was fifth in the preliminary, and Cassie Wilhelm, who was sixth.

Top finishes in the compulsory included Kayla Haggarty’s fourth in the pre-preliminary, Patricia Davie’s fourth in the preliminary, and Cassie Wilhelm’s fifth in the preliminary. In the free skate event, Tasha Getten was fourth in the basic Level 4, Emily Eakins was fourth in the pre-preliminary, Clare Franklin was fourth in the preliminary, and Cassie Wilhelm was fifth in the preliminary.

The Figure Skating Club will host an exhibition at 6 p.m. Dec. 29 at Howelsen Ice Arena. Admission is $5.
