Steamboat Springs Nearly everything went right for the Hayden High School boys basketball team in the final two minutes of Friday’s semifinal showdown against Grand Valley in the Meeker Tournament.
If much of anything had gone right in the rest of the game, the Tigers might be playing in today’s championship. As it is, they’ll face a 2 p.m. consolation game matchup against the host Cowboys after losing 41-38.
“It was not a very pretty game,” Hayden coach Mike Luppes said. “It took us awhile to get going. We really didn’t start playing until the fourth quarter.”
When the Tigers did get going, they nearly made up for all the time they’d taken off. Trailing by 10 with two minutes remaining, they closed the gap to three. They even had the ball with an open 3-point shot with five seconds remaining. It rattled out, however.
“We did a lot of things right in that last two minutes,” Luppes said. “We kept playing hard.”
The team was turnover prone in the first half and dreadful from the free-throw line all night. Hayden finished 8-of-22 there.
Senior Graig Medvesk finished with 15 points to lead the team. Sophomore Mark Doolin, meanwhile, had a double-double with 10 point and 10 rebounds.
