Steamboat Springs The third quarter proved decisive for the Steamboat boys Saturday, and it was just as important for the Steamboat girls basketball team. The Sailors outscored Basalt by 18 in the third quarter Saturday on the way to a 44-33 victory in the Brenda Patch Tournament in Roaring Fork.
“Our defensive intensity in that second half was great,” coach John Ameen said. “Our second half was much better. That’s how we need to play all the time.”
It certainly was good enough Saturday. Steamboat led by just one, 22-21, at the half before going on a 22-4 run through the third quarter.
The Sailors didn’t score any points in the fourth, but they didn’t need to. They kept up their defense and won handily.
Tara Spitellie scored 15 points while Hannah Moore added 13. Katie Lettunich scored 10, eight of them coming from the free-throw line.
The team opens play in the Steamboat Shootout at 8:15 p.m. Thursday against Windsor.
“In my five years as coach, the teams here this year are probably the best we’ve seen,” Ameen said. “This weekend, we had good spurts and good quarters and good halves. We need to be focusing on doing everything for four quarters.”
