2010-11 Sailors boys basketball schedule

— The Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team won handily Saturday afternoon, defeating Basalt, 47-33, at the Brenda Patch Tournament in Roaring Fork.

The Sailors built on their lead steadily throughout the game, but it was a huge third quarter that put the contest out of reach. A day after holding Roaring Fork to two points in the third quarter, Steamboat held Basalt to three points, paving the way for the comfortable victory.

“We definitely played well, both in that quarter and the game,” Steamboat coach Luke DeWolfe said. “That was the changing point in the game.”

Steamboat led by eight after the first half, and then outscored Basalt by eight points in the third quarter alone.

Randall Nelson logged a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Charles Wood, meanwhile, exploded for 17 points.

“Charles really had his breakout game,” DeWolfe said. “He played really well. It was the first game he’s really put together a complete game and played a solid four quarters.”

Steamboat, 2-1, will prepare for its own tournament, the Steamboat Shootout, which begins Thursday. The Sailors will play Palmer Ridge to open the eight-team tournament.

“That’s a great thing for the kids and the community, to have outstanding teams coming up here,” DeWolfe said. “This year, the tournament will be as good as it’s ever been, so we’re excited to host it. There should be some great basketball.”
