Steamboat Springs Soroco High School junior Tristan Palyo led the way Saturday as the Rams wrestling team opened its season with a strong performance at a tournament at Middle Park High School.
Palyo was second, wrestling in the finals of a high school tournament for the first time.
“It’s disappointing he lost, but it’s exciting that he wrestled that tough in a big tournament to get to the finals,” Soroco coach Jay Whaley said.
He had plenty of company in placing.
Junior Richard Gonzales managed a fourth-place finish in the 32-man, 160-pound bracket. Sophomore 140-pounder Josh Baker was fifth, and 171-pound freshman Cody Constine was sixth.
“For a freshman like Cody, just to place in a tournament like this, that was a big shock to us,” Whaley said. “He really wrestled hard.”
Junior 103-pounder Lauryn Bruggink forfeited her final two matches after sustaining a shoulder injury, but she finished sixth.
Hayden and Steamboat Springs high schools also competed in the meet, but neither coach could be reached Saturday.
