Steamboat Briefs: Registration period for winter rec sports leagues closes today

Registration is almost closed for the city of Steamboat Springs’ adult basketball, volleyball or indoor soccer leagues. Leagues start in early January and run until early April. All teams and those looking to join a team must register by 5:30 p.m. today at the Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services Department Office, 245 Howelsen Parkway. Weekend lodging expected to be 25 percent of capacity

About 3,500 people are expected to visit Steamboat Springs this weekend, filling local lodging to about 25 percent of total capacity, according to the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association’s weekly lodging barometer. A year ago, the forecast for the corresponding weekend of Dec. 5, 2009, projected 3,800 visitors, or about 28 percent of capacity. The actual count for that weekend turned out to be 4,300 visitors, or 31 percent of capacity. This weekend’s forecast includes projections of 40 percent capacity for downtown lodging and 30 percent capacity for hotels near the base of Mount Werner and Steamboat Ski Area.

October sees sales tax dip of about 1.4 percent

October sales tax revenues totaled $954,637, a decrease of about 1.4 percent compared with the $967,698 collected in October 2009, according to preliminary figures city finance officials released Wednesday. City staff said the customary preliminary report, with more details about October collections, would be released later this week. The city’s conversion to a new software system led to the delay, according to a Steamboat Springs news release.

North Routt firefighters extinguish chimney blaze

North Routt Fire Protection District firefighters and Routt County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to a chimney fire in North Routt County on Tuesday evening.

The fire was at a house near Round Mountain Ranch, between mile marker 15 and 16 on Routt County Road 129.

Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Mellisa Baumgartner said there were four people in the home when the fire broke out and they got out of the home safely. She said the fire damaged the chimney but not the rest of the house.

Youth hockey comes to Steamboat this weekend

The Ski Town Classic Hock­­ey Tournament is hosting Steam­boat Springs Youth Hockey Association PeeWee A, Bantam A and Bantam B (ages 11 to 14) teams as well as teams from across the state Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All games will be at Howelsen Ice Arena, and admission is free. The schedules and rosters for all teams are at www.steamboatyouthhockey.com

Rio Grande event to help Partners in Routt County

The Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant in Steamboat Springs is donating 10 percent of its proceeds Sunday to Partners in Routt County, a local youth mentoring organization. Optimist Club to sponsor Dec. 11 Santa’s Workshop

The Optimist Club of Steamboat Springs is sponsoring the second annual Santa’s Workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Boys & Girls Club of Steamboat. The family event is free and offers a variety of holiday festivities, including Mrs. Claus cookie decorating, writing a letter to Santa, visiting with Santa, a holiday puppet show, reindeer games, holiday crafts and more. Fundraiser for area man in motorcycle crash is Sunday

Friends of Mike “Goose” Guseman will host a fundraiser for Guseman as he continues recovery after a June 15 motorcycle crash. The fundraiser is from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Sweetwater Grill. Donations are “$100 at the door, but we’ll take $10,” organizer Dawn Schiesser said.

The band Duckin’ Bullets will play, and appetizers will be served. Schiesser said Guseman started walking for the first time this week with the aid of a walker. For more information, call Schiesser at 970-846-6649.
