The massive field of competitors for Sunday’s Steamboat Triathlon splashed through Lake Catamount and rolled and ran over the hills southeast of Steamboat Springs, hundreds of athletes soaking in what was a breezy but picturesque Yampa Valley morning.

Fairlies land in Steamboat after hurricane diplaced family

From the safety of a Lafayette, La., hotel room five years ago today, Mary Anne Fairlie and her family watched on television the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, just miles from their New Orleans home. The Fairlies were able to escape a day before the storm hit Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, using back roads to avoid the traffic of New Orleans residents leaving their homes and belongings behind.

3 people spend night outdoors after accident in North Routt

Three people, including a small child, were not seriously injured after their car rolled off Routt County Road 129 in North Routt County and caused them to spend Saturday night outdoors, a Colorado State Patrol trooper said Sunday.

Rocky Mountain Youth Corps recently was named a Partner of the Year through the Governor’s Summer Job Hunt Program. In addition, two RMYC members also were recognized. They are Andrew Fonseca, of Milner, and Jesse McAndrew, of Hayden.

Steamboat soccer readies to defend league title

As Steamboat Springs High School coach Rob Bohlmann surveyed the field Thursday, he was asked how he planned to replace the eight seniors from last season’s Western Slope League championship team. “I think it was six seniors, actually,” Bohlmann said. “But there was a lot of quality in there. Maybe that’s where you’re getting that number.”

Bus stop changes worry Steamboat business owners

City officials say federal rules factor into stop sizes, locations

City and Colorado Depart­ment of Transportation officials are meeting this week to talk about the new bus stops along Lincoln Avenue. The stops were installed last spring as part of CDOT’s downtown repaving and improvement project, conducted by Scott Contracting.

On Wednesday, 62 Lowell Whiteman Primary School students armed with fishing poles and tents charged into the area, ready to celebrate the end of summer vacation with a three-day camping trip. The school has hosted the camping trip for 18 years.

It’s the pending sales that are most telling about what’s happening right now in the market. “The number of pending contracts right now is 100 compared to 70 in the third week of July,” Realtor Jon Wade, of Colorado Group Realty, said Wednesday.

Sailors cross-country team aims for return to state

To many, the idea of high school cross-country is a little hard to understand. Just ask the Steamboat Springs High School boys team, whose members have been trying — so far in vain — to explain their love for the sport to all their friends. “We tell them, ‘It’s fun!’” Asher Rohde said. “No one believes me.”
