Fairlies land in Steamboat after hurricane diplaced family
From the safety of a Lafayette, La., hotel room five years ago today, Mary Anne Fairlie and her family watched on television the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, just miles from their New Orleans home. The Fairlies were able to escape a day before the storm hit Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, using back roads to avoid the traffic of New Orleans residents leaving their homes and belongings behind.

Class notes: 2 Rocky Mountain Youth Corps members awarded
Rocky Mountain Youth Corps recently was named a Partner of the Year through the Governor’s Summer Job Hunt Program. In addition, two RMYC members also were recognized. They are Andrew Fonseca, of Milner, and Jesse McAndrew, of Hayden.

Steamboat soccer readies to defend league title
As Steamboat Springs High School coach Rob Bohlmann surveyed the field Thursday, he was asked how he planned to replace the eight seniors from last season’s Western Slope League championship team. “I think it was six seniors, actually,” Bohlmann said. “But there was a lot of quality in there. Maybe that’s where you’re getting that number.”

City officials say federal rules factor into stop sizes, locations
City and Colorado Department of Transportation officials are meeting this week to talk about the new bus stops along Lincoln Avenue. The stops were installed last spring as part of CDOT’s downtown repaving and improvement project, conducted by Scott Contracting.

Sailors cross-country team aims for return to state
To many, the idea of high school cross-country is a little hard to understand. Just ask the Steamboat Springs High School boys team, whose members have been trying — so far in vain — to explain their love for the sport to all their friends. “We tell them, ‘It’s fun!’” Asher Rohde said. “No one believes me.”

Nonprofit group purchases 2 commercial condos
This month, the Educational Foundation of the Rocky Mountain Ski Instructors Association closed on the purchase of side-by-side commercial condominiums on the street level of The Steamboat Grand. The SIA paid $495,000 this month to buy the commercial space.
