A community group working to create a downtown cultural venue took a major step in that direction this week. A spokesman for Friends of the Chief confirmed Friday afternoon that the group has placed the Chief Plaza movie theater under a purchase contract.

Baumgardner’s Arizona border trip ignites Colorado immigration debate

Rep. Randy Baumgardner recently spent about six days in Arizona with 10 other Republican state legislators. The Republican from Hot Sulphur Springs said “there’s a very good possibility there will be legislation drafted” regarding immigration laws in Colorado’s 2011 legislative session.

Steamboat restaurant owner accused of indecent exposure again

Marco Serge Pauvert, 55, owner of The Epicurean restaurant in downtown Steamboat Springs, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of indecent exposure. The incident was reported just before 4 p.m. Sgt. Rich Brown, of the Steamboat Springs Police Department, said a woman went into the restaurant that after­­noon to talk to Pauvert about a business matter.

Winona’s owner Jamie McQuade hopes to reopen the week of Labor Day. Winona’s was forced to close July 21 after the subflooring in the restaurant’s kitchen collapsed while being retiled.

The smooth surfaces along Colorado Highway 131 are going to get a little rougher starting early in September, when a four-mile stretch of road starting at the intersection with U.S. Highway 40 gets a chip-and-seal treatment.

Steamboat briefs: No cause identified in Old Town duplex fire

Steamboat Springs Fire Mar­shal Jay Muhme said Thursday that investigators still don’t know the cause of the Aug. 14 fire at a downtown Steamboat duplex. The blaze at Fourth and Oak streets displaced 18 tenants, who now are living in temporary housing provided by Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. at The Ponds at Steamboat.

Students started to fill the dorms at The Lowell Whiteman School this week. The new boys dorm, Kakela Hall, is a new 6,000-square-foot dorm where 20 junior and senior boys live. The dorm replaces the 1940s-era bunkhouse.

Perry-Mansfield to host 2 performances in Steamboat

By Monday, Jay Uhler will be back in North Andover, Mass., and back on stage performing after-dinner entertainment at clubs and restaurants, just as he has for decades. At 72 years old, the gray-haired man still has a yearning for self-expression, which brought him to Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp for the Art of Cabaret Workshop.

The annual wheat harvest is getting under way in Northwest Colorado, which means combines and hauling equipment are being readied and the support crews are being organized in order to secure a successful harvest. Here in the Yampa Valley, hard red wheat is the most prevalent variety.
