Buddy the spaniel, the lone survivor of an Aug. 15 garage fire, rolled in the grass outside the burnt shell of the garage Tuesday. Five dogs died in the fire in the Elk River Estates neighborhood, but the owners say they were lucky it wasn’t worse. Investigators say a propane-powered garage heater caused the fire.

Operators of the Iron Horse Inn are paying the city lower monthly rent through a deal implemented this summer while they work to move the inn toward profitability. The Steamboat Springs City Council is scheduled to act on the new lease Sept. 7.

Steamboat men OK after Kremmling explosion
Two Steamboat men injured in a house explosion in Kremmling on Tuesday are in stable condition and recovering at University Hospital in Denver. The men suffered burns to their hands, arms and legs and are expected to be released in the next couple of days.

Sandy Wisecup, the Oak Creek woman charged with 80 counts of animal cruelty, will next appear in court Sept. 21 after her arraignment was postponed Tuesday morning.

Grant would improve Routt County Road 14
Key stretch would be straightened, widened if federal funding request is approved
The Routt County Board of Commissioners has formally applied for a $14.52 million federal road grant that would allow the straightening and widening of a heavily traveled 5.2-mile stretch of Routt County Road 14 spanning Yellowjacket Pass. This is the county’s second attempt to land a federal TIGER grant, and this time officials think they’ve done their homework and are shovel-ready.
