Halle Hamilton, 6, and her border collie, Colt, won the grand champion’s ribbon Friday in the Dress Your Animal contest at the Routt County Fair. Also pictured, in the middleground, is reserve grand champion Lauren Ehrlich, 8, whose sheep portrayed the Greek god Apollo to her Artemis.

Steamboat Springs Halle Hamilton, 6, doesn’t remember the Sonny and Cher television show, but she’s learned a few of Cher’s moves anyway.
“I watched Sonny and Cher on YouTube,” she said Friday at the Routt County Fair.
Hamilton and her border collie, Colt, also 6 and too young to remember Sonny Bono, had just wrapped up the grand champion ribbon in the Dress Your Animal contest.
It didn’t hurt that Halle had learned to mimic Cher by placing her right thumb under long black tresses and casually flip them over her shoulder before fixing Sonny, er, Colt with an impatient look.
All that remained was to persuade Colt to put on a brightly printed vest (the real Sonny Bono wore a shaggy caveman vest, if I’m not mistaken) and rehearse “I got you, Babe.”
“They say we’re young and we don’t know,
We won’t find out until we grow,
Well I don’t know if all that’s true,
Cause you got me, and baby I got you…”
Dog, I got you dog.
Lauren Ehrlich, 8, turned to the classics for inspiration in the Dress Your Animal contest. Not classic as in classic rock, but classic as in Greek mythology. Lauren’s male sheep played Apollo, the Greek God of music and healing, and she portrayed his sister, Artemis.
Where did that come from?
“We studied Greek mythology in school,” Lauren said.
As everyone recalls from third grade, Artemis was the goddess of the hunt.
Which led a reporter to ask Artemis why she was wearing cowgirl boots instead of sandals in the show ring on Friday.
“I do have sandals, but I was afraid (Apollo) would step on my toes,” came the reply.
And the beat goes on.
