If you go
What: 12th annual Ski Haus Continental Divide Trail Run
When: 8 a.m. Sunday
Where: Race begins at the Fish Creek Falls parking area
Steamboat Springs Runners interested in lacing ’em up for the 12th annual Ski Haus Continental Divide Trail Run on Sunday better hurry over to Ski Haus today.
As of Friday morning, only five slots remained for the increasingly popular trail run. Race director Greg Danziger credits its growth to two local women.
“The biggest single reason is the work of Lisa Barbour and Cara Marrs,” Danziger said, noting the run is part of the Trail Runner Magazine Trophy Series. “They’ve done a tremendous job of getting this in front of more people and getting it more exposure.”
The race begins at 8 a.m. Sunday. Online registration is closed, so those interested in signing up for one of the last remaining spaces need to go to Ski Haus.
There will be a 7 a.m. shuttle from the Knoll Parking Lot near the base of Steamboat Ski Area that will take runners to the start.
The 16-mile race begins at the Fish Creek Falls parking lot and follows the Fish Creek Falls Trail up to Long Lake. Runners then cross the Mountain View Trail to Mount Werner and down to Thunderhead.
Runners can ride the gondola down to the base when finished. There also will be a clothes drop at the start and pick-up at the end.
Despite aid stations at the start of the Mountain View Trail and at the top of Mount Werner, runners should be prepared for a difficult race. There will be a four-hour cutoff time for runners. The race begins early because the trail takes runners to remote areas where weather can come and go quickly.
Regardless, Danziger said one of the main reasons for the popularity of the race is the course. The mostly singletrack course climbs more than 3,500 feet and features some of the most appealing views and terrain in the Running Series.
“This is actually a really great course,” he said. “It’s challenging, but it’s achievable.”
