Veterans of World War II gather for event

More than 30 people from across Colorado joined three World War II veterans who were part of the 10th Mountain Division at a Steamboat Springs reunion Friday night. Friends, descendants and family members of the division swapped stories about their fathers’ military service.

Halle Hamilton, 6, doesn’t remember the Sonny and Cher television show, but she’s learned a few of Cher’s moves anyway. Hamilton and her border collie, Colt, also 6 and too young to remember Sonny Bono, had just wrapped up the grand champion ribbon in the Dress Your Animal contest.

Steamboat briefs: County Road 16 to close Tuesday for culvert work

Routt County Road 16 south of Stagecoach will be closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday while Road and Bridge Department employees replace a culvert. The closure will be at mile marker 12.

Keegan Burger kept his head about him, and after he and Aspen’s Bryan Mehall battled back and forth in the first set, Burger dominated the second. Burger’s performance was all the more important as regular No. 1 singles player Jamey Swiggart will miss the season.

Steamboat library to launch new adult event

Story-time for Grownups will begin Oct. 4

To Stuart Handloff, a local theater director and artistic director of the new Story-time for Grownups program at Bud Werner Memorial Library, storytelling has all of the components of true theater, except for the movement. The new program will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 4.

Summer series projects to be ‘on budget’ as season ends

When Colorado legends Drew Emmitt and Bill Nershi plucked the final strings of the Free Summer Concert Series on Friday night, it didn’t mean the end of the season for organizers. Not if the series is to remain free, that is. Promoter and co-founder John Wald­­­man confirms it will after an on-budget year.

Tom Ross: Cabbage patch takes over Routt County Fair

You have until 2 p.m. Sunday to set eyes on one of the biggest zucchinis Routt County has ever produced. The 12-pound squash is on display in the produce section of the Routt County Fair Exhibit Hall and was grown by a junior entrant, Teagann Yeager, of Clark.

Angler Craig Horlacher ate raw fish to stay alive

Craig Horlacher, the man who spent at least four days stranded in northern Routt County, reportedly ate several raw fish and attempted to send his backpack downstream with a note to draw attention to his plight. Friends of Hor­­­­­­lacher reported Friday that he appears to be doing well.
