— A Steamboat Springs man was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center with serious injuries after a motorcycle crash around a tight turn on Routt County Road 33 on Sunday afternoon.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Brady Kobus said George Hine, 43, was bleeding from a head injury when taken to the hospital after the accident that occurred at about 1 p.m. Sunday on the road known as Twentymile Road. Routt County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Paul Yonekawa said Hine was conscious, breathing and interacting with ambulance crews on his way to the hospital. No other cars or motorcycles were involved in the accident, which occurred near the Stanko ranch just west of Steamboat Springs.

An update on Hine’s condition was not available Sunday from Yampa Valley Medical Center because of confidentiality requests by Hine’s family.

Kobus said Hine was traveling south before sliding off the road and colliding with a post on a barbed-wire fence. Hine was found facedown beneath the motorcycle. Kobus said Hine was not wearing a helmet and was traveling too fast as he came down the hill toward the turn.

Hine has been Steamboat Springs’ city arborist for 16 years.

Kobus said the crash occurred at the “exact same spot” as the crash that killed Dustin Dahlin, former general manager of Big O Tires and Grease Monkey, on Sept. 16, 2009.

Kobus said in a news release at the time that Dahlin was southbound on Twentymile Road that evening when his Jeep went off the right side of the road and ejected Dahlin while rolling twice.

Another motorcycle crash occurred on C.R. 33 on Aug. 10 at a spot several miles farther south, near C.R. 179 south of Milner. A 65-year-old man was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center in serious condition after that accident.

Rancher Jo Stanko said she and her husband, Jim Stanko, were inside having lunch when Sunday’s crash occurred near their home. Jo Stanko recalled other accidents at that curve.

“Just warn people — this road is dangerous,” she said.
