Steamboat Springs Jamey Swiggart’s stay in the massive USTA Boys 18 and 16 National Championships tournament in Kalamazoo, Mich., turned out to be shorter than he’d hoped.
Still, Swiggart, who will enter his junior season with the Steamboat Springs High School boys tennis team this month, said the experience made the trip well worth his time.
He lost in singles and doubles in his opening round Saturday and then lost again in singles Monday to fall from the tournament’s field.
“It was great,” he said. “There were a bunch of college coaches there and a couple kids that were already on tour or had a year of college under their belts. Coming from Steamboat Springs, to get to Kalamazoo is a pretty big deal for me.”
The high school tennis season kicks off Aug. 20 with a home match against Aspen.
