Minor injuries in morning crash in Steamboat
Updated August 6, 2010 at 12:38 a.m.
Steamboat Springs One person was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center with minor injuries this morning after a three-vehicle crash on the west side of Steamboat Springs.
Steamboat Springs Police Department officer Bill Stucker said a Dodge pickup apparently rear-ended a Toyota pickup as the Toyota prepared to turn left from U.S. Highway 40 at Snow Bowl Plaza at about 8:30 a.m. That propelled the Toyota pickup into an oncoming Lexus.
Stucker said medical crews took the man driving the Toyota to YVMC with minor injuries. Neither of the other drivers was taken by ambulance. Stucker said a ticket was issued in the crash, but because he was not the investigating officer, he didn’t know what the ticket was for.
The highway was temporarily closed as emergency responders worked at the scene, causing a traffic backup.

That area is not marked well. There isn't a dedicated turning lane when you are heading west. However, the yellow lines that start to widen 40 as it comes into town makes a double-wide westbound lane at snow bowl. It leaves barely enough space for cars to make a left turn while still allowing traffic to continue west without "illegally passing on the right". By illegally passing I mean going outside the white line to pass.
I've never been quite certain if it really is legal to pass cars that are turning there even if you do stay inside the white line. I do it because the one time I stopped it nearly created a road rage incident with the pissed off cowboy behind me.
