The circus is returning to Hayden.

The Hayden Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus during performances at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dry Creek Park.

Hayden Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors President Karen Gilroy said it’s been more than 15 years since the circus last appeared in Hayden.

She said Culpepper & Merriweather contacted the Chamber and said they would be in the Yampa Valley. Gilroy said the circus asked whether the Chamber would host a couple of shows in Hayden. She said the Chamber Board didn’t hesitate.

“We talked it over and decided it was a good idea,” Gilroy said. “We do things for our members and our families in the community. That was the main reason, just to bring it to town.”

According to its website, Culpepper & Merriweather started in 1985. The circus, based in Hugo, Okla., travels 15,000 miles annually to perform in 200 communities in 18 states from March through October.

Before the performance in Hayden, Gilroy said children are invited to the tent raising at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Dry Creek Park. There is no fee for the event that will include a tour, meeting with performers and information about the care of circus animals.

Tickets for the circus are being sold in advance at Hayden Mat and Frame, the Bear River Co-op, the Hayden Public Library, the HiWay Bar and Wolf Mountain Pizza. Tickets are $9 for adults, $6 for children ages 2 to 12 and free for children younger than 2 years old.

On the day of the circus, tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for children.

A portion of the tickets sales will go back to the Chamber.

“One of the things that we’d like to do if we make any money from this circus promotion is community promotion, how to advertise our businesses, and our members, and our housing, and our schools and all Hayden has to offer,” Chamber Board Joyce Folley said. “We’re just doing it to benefit Hayden, to give the kids something to do, give the families something to do. We thought it was a good opportunity to support Hayden and the activities Hayden has.”

The Culpepper & Merriweather Circus will be in Steamboat Springs at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Routt County Road 129 and Downhill Drive.
