Jury awards $2.4 million in bike-car crash near Steamboat

Wayne and Julie Ranieri awarded for damages and compensation

A Routt County jury awarded Julie and Wayne Ranieri $2.4 million in damages and compensation last week after a March 2009 crash near Lake Catamount. Wayne Ranieri was riding his bicycle, and his lawyer said he landed on his buttocks, compressing his spine and crushing a vertebra.

Stolen truck and trailer crash in Steamboat

Police cooperating with investigation in Wyoming

The truck and the trailer were found Saturday near U.S. Highway 40 and Weiss Drive. The truck had driven off the side of the road and the trailer had tipped on its side. Someone later tried to set the items on fire, police said, and they were reported stolen from Wyoming.

CMC students charged with Social Host violation

Steamboat Springs police Sgt. Dale Coyner said a total of 22 tickets for minor in possession of alcohol were distributed during a party Friday night, including four to the tenants of the home in the 1300 block of Blue Sage Drive. Four were charged with violating the Steamboat Springs Social Host Ordinance.

Oak Creek man pleads guilty to animal cruelty

The man was accused of chasing a cat up the hill on Moffat Avenue in a pickup and then running it over. Chat Hettinger is scheduled to appear for sentencing at 10:30 a.m. May 26.

Raccoon causes electricity problems in Steamboat

The animal interfered with a piece of equipment Tuesday night at a substation in the Brooklyn neighborhood. YVEA later planned a 15-minute outage at about 9:40 p.m. to address the problem and link consumers to another substation.

Intrawest refinances debt and completes new loan

Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp.'s parent company has announced a successful refinancing and a new loan. The company did not release the terms of the loan, which is scheduled to mature in 2014. Intrawest operates Winter Park ski area for Denver. The Vancouver, British Columbia-based company also owns Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia, the site of many 2010 Winter Olympic Games events.

A summer theater festival director is asking potential actors to “be just the best person they can be” as they audition for roles Sunday and Monday. Local actors and musicians are invited to audition for the 2010 Piknik Theatre Festival from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday or 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Depot Art Center.

The Routt County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to table indefinitely the transfer of development rights that have become controversial as some county residents have branded them as enabling urban sprawl.

Steamboat briefs: Part of Lincoln Avenue to be closed early this morning

Although Moffat County High School was able to outlast Steamboat Springs High School boys varsity baseball team, 9-3, on Tuesday in Craig, manger Dave Roy said the improvement his team has made is easily visible. “We’ve made some changes, and we fell like we’re a lot more solid up the middle,” Roy said. “We have Carson Becker at shortstop, so we have some strength up the middle.”

Steamboat girls soccer defeats Moffat County

The Steamboat Springs High School girls soccer team shook off more rust and a tough outing after the first day back from spring break, downing rival Moffat County, 4-0, on Tuesday in Craig. Steamboat, which fell to Cheyenne Central on Monday, was never really challenged Tuesday.
