Best of the Web: Crayfish
Advertisement
■ If you move them away from where they were caught, some yo-yo will end up putting them back in the water somewhere and they will reproduce and harm the environment there. That’s probably how they got up here — somebody brought a few of them as aquarium or science project subjects and ended up releasing the survivors.

■ If you want to harvest them, kill them on the spot. This is the best way to ensure that they are not inadvertently released in an uncontaminated waterway. If you can’t understand that, then there is a good chance that the crayfish will outsmart you into releasing it into a different body of water.

Sheriff race
All of this seems like a good argument for a non-politically affiliated sheriff. Why do we still have this as a political office? The chiefs of police in Steamboat and Hayden are not political offices. Those folks are in their positions because of their merit and effectiveness as law enforcers and managers. Why should the sheriff be any different? I pose the hypothesis that much of the drama we endure with the sheriff would disappear by making this a position based on professional merit rather than political affiliation.

Marianna Raftopoulos
■ Rest in peace, Marianna, and my thoughts and prayers are with the family. Marianna was passionate about Northwest Colorado and a powerhouse to the many efforts she worked on. She will be sorely missed, yet one of those dynamos who truly made a difference in her short life!

■ Godspeed Marianna — I so enjoyed working with you in your role with the Craig/Moffat EDP. You always made me feel welcomed and valued. The best ways I can describe all my dealing with you are the words of style-grace and class. You will be missed not only in Moffat County but up valley in Routt County as well. God’s blessing to your family.

Village Inn closes
■ Every business that closes here is another dagger in the economic heartbeat of this community. Seventeen more to the unemployed list and you have a few angry people showing their colors.
So a warning to anyone thinking of a franchise here, watch out for the Steamboat locals who have an opinion.
Seems similar to those who complain of certain news organizations with whom they disagree.
For the time being we Americans have the freedom of choice to change the channel or eat somewhere else, don’t know how long though with what is going on these days.
In summary we have lost a great early morning breakfast spot that served locals on the east side of town in many ways.
It’s not a good news story regardless of which side one takes here.

■ The space would make a great place for a dance hall/bar. …
Great parking and lots of bus stops. Just a thought. Heck, might even be able to employ some of those 17 employees who need a job.
If only I would win the lottery to finance it. …

■ Community involvement by our merchants goes a long way in determining whether people care if a business thrives or not. If, for example, Freshies were to close, I think most of the town would be in mourning. The Foxes do so much for this town and its citizens.
