Capote pleads guilty in Steamboat
Sentencing on manslaughter charge scheduled for June 4
Eduardo Capote entered his official guilty plea on a manslaughter charge Friday afternoon, ending the criminal prosecution resulting from a Jan. 1, 2009, fight in downtown Steamboat Springs that led to Richard Lopez’s death. Capote, who lives in Miami, began serving time Monday at the Routt County Jail and appeared in court handcuffed.

Unforeseen problems have delayed for a few days the start of paving work on U.S. Highway 40 in downtown Steamboat Springs. Jody Patten, project information manager for Scott Contracting, said paving was scheduled to begin this week. Instead, it’s scheduled to begin Wednesday or Thursday.

Some drivers might have the wrong idea about how best to maneuver through the U.S. Highway 40 construction in downtown Steamboat Springs. The number represents 1,194 people without jobs in Routt County. The figures were released today by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment and aren't adjusted for typical seasonal changes in the jobs arena.

Steamboat Brief: City officials: Skatepark off Lagoon Court not yet open
City officials are reminding residents that the new concrete skatepark off Lagoon Court west of downtown is not open to the public. A volunteer workday is scheduled for May 1 to complete fencing, signage and landscaping. A grand opening will occur at a later date.

Lyon Drug offers to dispose of unused medications
There are few safe disposal options for expired and unused medication in Steamboat Springs. Flushing or throwing away the meds can be a risk to the environment or to neighborhood pets, but keeping the drugs can be a risk for curious teenagers. Lyon Drug Store now is accepting any leftover prescription drug for free from customers of any drug store.

Introductory painting at Colorado Mountain College’s Alpine Campus is the first optional art class business major Jade Stevens has ever taken. On Thursday morning, she joined several classmates at the Center for Visual Arts to hang CMC’s annual student and faculty art show.
