Steamboat Springs With Closing Day at Steamboat Ski Area in the rearview mirror, opening day at golf courses around the Yampa Valley quickly is approaching.
Yampa Valley Golf Course in Craig is open and in midseason form. All 18 holes are open for play. Nonresident rates are $38 for 18 holes and $25 for nine holes.
Closer to home, four area courses are moving closer to opening.
Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club, Haymaker Golf Course, the Steamboat Golf Club and Catamount Ranch & Club are looking at the warm weather as a sign that golf season in Steamboat is approaching.
Each, however, depends on a golfer’s least favorite phrase: weather depending.
“We’re shooting for May 1,” Rollingstone Director of Golf Brian Thorne said. “It’s looking good right now, but it’s always weather dependent.”
Thorne said when the course does open, it will most likely just be the front nine. Rollingstone should offer several early season deals for locals. The phone system at Rollingstone is set to be back up April 26, and more information will be available then. For updates, call 879-1391.
“We got a few things going on with memberships, local specials and prime season specials,” Thorne said. “Right now, we just don’t have the specifics.”
At Haymaker Golf Course, the official open date has yet to be determined. The clubhouse will open April 26, where season pass and punch cards will be sold. Luke Brosterhous, the head golf professional and director of instruction, said he communicates with superintendent Bill Whelihan as much as possible to figure out when the course will be able to open.
Brosterhous said there is still a good amount of snow on the course, and a specific date won’t be known until it all melts off and staff members see how the course handled the winter.
The driving range, however, should be open earlier than the course, Brosterhous said.
“We should know quite a bit more in the next couple of days with the nice weather,” he said.

An answering machine at the Steamboat Golf Club said the course aims to open the weekend of April 24. For updates, possible tee times and more information, call 879-4295.
Catamount said on its Twitter account Wednesday that it expects to open May 8.
