Steamboat Springs A 71-year-old Boulder man was rescued Sunday evening from near the Morningside lift at Steamboat Ski Area.
Routt County Search and Rescue crews were paged just after 6 p.m. Sunday. Incident Commander Darrel Levingston said the man and a friend, both from Boulder, started skiing the Hogan Park Trail from Rabbit Ears Pass at about 8:30 a.m. Levingston said the men, who are in good physical shape, made it to the top of the mountain.
“The 71-year-old was just too exhausted to try to ski down safely,” Levingston said. “There were no medical concerns. It was just too long of a day.”
Levingston said Search and Rescue prepared to send a team of four to extricate the men because Steamboat Ski Patrol already had shut down, but ski area security staff found someone to get the men out by snowmobile.
The men were prepared for the trip, with the exception of not having enough water, Levingston said. He reminded people to always bring plenty of water when going into the backcountry.
