— Donavon Frankenreiter sings the kind of songs meant to make everything feel better.

An ear for pop music, an attitude for living easy and a knack for soul-steeped melody have driven Frankenreiter’s success since longtime friend and musician Jack Johnson helped him put out his first record in 2004.

The professional-surfer-turned-musician plays a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in Gondola Square at the base of Steamboat Ski Area. Frankenreiter’s show is the last of the 11th annual Bud Light Rocks the Boat free concert series and is part of the ski area’s Springalicious season-ending celebration.

Frankenreiter answered a few questions in an e-mail interview:

Steamboat Pilot & Today: What can people expect from your concert Sunday?

Donavon Frankenreiter: Hopefully, some great music and perfect weather. Also, we have a very special guest coming up to play with us that I am very excited about.

SP&T: How would you describe what you do musically? Who are your influences? How do you approach songwriting, and how do you approach performing?

DF: That’s all done with feel. I have never been taught and/or trained in any of it, so it’s all off of feel. How we will be feeling — and also the audience that day — is how the performance will turn out. Songwriting just comes and goes — that is something that is never planned. Some days, you feel like writing, and others, you just feel like going surfing. I am influenced by many, but I really love Bob Dylan, (Jimi) Hendrix, Bob Marley and Elvis.

SP&T: How has your music grown or changed or evolved since you got started? What have you learned, and how does that apply to what you’re doing now?

DF: When I started, I never sang or wrote my own songs, so I guess you can say it’s come a long way. I started when I was 16, and I am 37 now, so just for the last 10 years, I have been singing and writing. It’s been a very fun and incredible journey with my music. It can take you to places that nothing else in this world can do.

SP&T: Many of your songs have a positive bent to them. Is that intentional? What do you hope people are walking away with when they listen to you? Where do your song subjects come from?

DF: My songs are about living in the moment, having fun with your friends and family, and just enjoying what’s going on around you, ’cause it can all be taken away in the blink of an eye. I hope everyone walks away with a smile on their face saying, “That was a wonderful Sunday afternoon.”
