Steamboat Springs — During a monthlong residency in Routt County in spring 2008, filmmaker Burcu Koray developed connections to places and people she doesn’t expect to forget.

In the almost two years since her residency ended, Koray has written and received correspondence from the people she met while living here. She applied imagery, drawings and text from that correspondence to “Incoming — Outbound: Letters to Colorado,” a collection of embroidered pieces of silk. The art is on display at Denver International Airport.

“The nature and landscapes of Routt County are so memorable, I developed a real attachment and a real connection,” Koray said.

She plans to continue collecting letters to add to the show, which she hopes to take to other locations, she said. Koray will talk about the work at 6:30 p.m. today at Epilogue Book Co.

“The installation is now completely made out of textiles, and I think it will grow as more and more people send me letters about Steamboat and Colorado,” Koray said. Koray’s mother, Sibel Gunel, helped embroider the silk with her textile design company, Onok.

Koray’s work is featured through June at DIA as part of a show called “33 Ideas.” Other visual and literary artists who have participated in Colorado Art Ranch residencies — including Steamboat residency alums Bland Hoke and Diana Rico — also are featured in the show.

In April and May 2008, Colorado Art Ranch — a nomadic arts organization that brings residencies to various Colorado locations each year — brought eight visual and literary artists to Routt County to create work related to land stewardship. Artists presented their work at Steamboat Art Museum at the end of the residency and did various outreach projects to give back to the community.

Colorado Art Ranch is sched­­uled to return to Routt County in September, when the organization will start an annual residency at The Carpenter Ranch in Hayden, according to the Colorado Art Ranch Web site. Colorado Art Ranch and The Nature Conservancy will host three artists for one month of creating and some ranch work.
