Parade, evening celebration honor Olympians with ties to city

Friday certainly served as another reminder of the U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team’s bustling success at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games — and rightfully so, with seven Olympic medals clanging together on the stage — but the overriding tone Friday was that it really does take a community to raise an Olympian.

During a reception today, local ceramic artist Gail Holthausen will let go of a piece of work that has followed her for years. An 18-inch-long wall hanging crafted from ceramic, acrylic, wire and glass, the large, purple flower represents a combination of the styles and techniques Holthausen has on display at Rustique Home & Garden Collection.

Hayden School Board Pres­ident Brian Hoza still couldn’t say Thursday when Mike Luppes would start as the district’s half-time superintendent. At a special School Board meeting Wednesday night, board members approved a new administrative structure for the 2010-11 school year.

Hunting season in Steamboat area could be big

2010 big-game tag deadline is Tuesday for season beginning Aug. 28

Colorado Division of Wild­life spokesman Randy Hampton acknowledged all the potential pitfalls Wednesday as he looked ahead at the state’s elk and deer hunting season, still five months away. “Everything points to 2010 being a good year to be a big-game hunter in Colorado,” Hampton said, “but it’s a long time until hunting season.”

A spring storm settled over Northwest Colorado on Thursday and was blamed for knocking out power to hundreds of residences, causing numerous car wrecks and delaying and canceling flights to and from Yampa Valley Regional Airport. Woman accused of stealing from Loggers Lane may face charges

The Routt County District Attorney’s Office is considering pursuing charges against a Steamboat Springs woman after she reportedly stole, then returned, more than $60,000 from a group of local businesses. Kati More is accused of taking the money while she was serving as the Loggers Lane Owners Association treasurer but returned the $60,000, plus $10,000 in fines and late fees.

In May 2008, Chelsea Nix set out on a two-week trip to Haiti with herself, her camera and an open mind. She took photos of children and older residents, hoping to capture an essence of the place and its people. A collection of shots from Nix’s travels in Haiti opens with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. today as part of First Friday Artwalk.

Steamboat briefs: 3rd annual Skate-a-thon for Autism is Saturday

The third annual Skate-a-thon for Autism and its related disorders is from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Howelsen Ice Arena. Skaters of all ages are welcome to skate laps to raise money for programs that support families affected by the disorder.

What to do this week in Steamboat for April 2 to 8

Galleries, museums and alternative venues showcase work by mostly local artists during the First Friday Artwalk event celebrating visual art in downtown Steamboat Springs. The Artwalk runs from 5 to 8 p.m. with 18 locations hosting openings and shows.
